The WCAG Contrast Standard
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) are international standards for making web content more accessible. Success Criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast) requires a specific ratio to ensure text is legible against its background.
Level AA: Requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold+).
Level AAA: The most stringent level, requiring 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. This is often the target for government and educational platforms.
